Preparing for Your Newborn Photography Session: A Calm & Simple Guide
So you've booked your newborn photography session—congratulations! Whether you're counting down the days until your baby arrives or your little one is already in your arms, it’s natural to wonder how best to prepare for the shoot.
Don’t worry—I’ve got you. As a specialist in natural newborn photography, I’ve worked with many wonderful families across Leeds and West Yorkshire, and I’m here to make the experience easy, relaxed, and memorable.
Here’s everything you need to know before the big day.
1. Keep Baby Comfortable
The more comfortable your baby is, the smoother the session will go. Here’s how to help them stay happy and content:
- Feed baby right before the shoot to encourage sleepiness and a full tummy.
- Dress them in something easy to remove, like a button-down onesie, so we don’t disturb them when changing.
- Keep the room warm (especially for in-home sessions) so baby feels cosy during outfit or wrap changes.
2. What to Wear (Parents & Siblings)
I always suggest keeping it simple, soft, and neutral. These timeless tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your baby and connection.
Parents:
- Neutral colours like beige, white, cream, soft grey, or pastel tones
- Avoid bold patterns, bright colours, or large logos
- Soft knits, cottons, and linens look beautiful on camera
Siblings:
- Coordinated with your palette (nothing too “matchy”)
- Keep little ones comfortable—snug knits or classic basics always work
💡 I’ll guide you through wardrobe choices before the session if you’d like support.
3. What to Bring
If you're visiting my studio in Leeds, I’ll have everything we need—blankets, wraps, and props. But it’s helpful to bring:
- A few nappies and wipes
- A spare change of clothes for baby (and you—just in case!)
- A dummy (even if baby doesn’t normally take one—it can be calming during posing)
- Any sentimental items you’d like included (a blanket, toy, or heirloom)
4. Expect Breaks & Baby-Led Pacing
Newborn sessions are never rushed. Every baby is different, and I follow their lead. That means:
- Time for cuddles, feeding, and soothing
- Patience with fussy moments (they’re totally normal!)
- Breaks as often as needed—no pressure, no rush
Whether we’re in your home or in the studio, the environment will always be calm, quiet, and baby-friendly.
5. Relax and Trust the Process
One of the best things you can do is relax and be present. Your baby can sense your energy, and the most beautiful photos often happen in the quiet, candid moments.
Let me take care of the posing, lighting, and details—you simply enjoy this time with your little one.
6.Don’t Worry if Things Don’t Go to Plan
Your baby might have a fussy moment. A sibling may need a snack break. That’s totally okay. These sessions are designed to be flexible, not perfect.
The best photos come from real, raw, loving moments, and those don’t need to be perfectly polished.
