Are you wondering when the perfect time is to capture those precious newborn moments?
I’m often asked:
“When should I schedule my baby’s newborn shoot?”
The answer depends on the kind of images you’re dreaming of.
Here’s a breakdown of the different stages of early life, what each offers photographically, and how to know what’s right for your family.
1. 7–14 Days Old: The Classic Newborn Stage
If you picture your baby curled up in those tiny, womb-like poses—peacefully sleeping on soft blankets—the first two weeks after birth are ideal.
At this age:
Babies are typically very sleepy and content
They retain that curled, snug posture from the womb
They are more likely to settle into those iconic posed shots
📅 When to book: I recommend reserving your session anytime after your 20-week scan, with a tentative date set for around a week after your due date.
📌 Flexibility is key—babies rarely arrive on schedule, so I keep my calendar open to accommodate early or late arrivals.
2. 3–5 Weeks Old: Eyes Open & Expressions
Prefer a few more awake moments and personality in your gallery? Around 3 to 5 weeks, babies begin to open their eyes more frequently and stay alert for longer stretches.
At this age:
We still may be able to achieve curled-up shots
Expect a mix of sleepy and awake images
You’ll start to see adorable yawns, stretches, and eye contact
This stage is perfect if you’d love to capture the early bond forming, while still preserving some of the newborn softness.
3. 5+ Weeks: Natural Connection & Early Smiles
Not ready to leave the house during those early postpartum weeks? Totally understandable. Many families prefer to settle into their new rhythm before scheduling a photo session.
By 5 weeks and beyond:
Your baby will likely be more alert and engaged
The session is less about posing, more about capturing connection
You’ll often see those first genuine smiles
At this stage, I’ll focus on interaction, cuddles, and natural moments—documenting what life really looks like as you bond with your newest family member. These lifestyle-style images are especially meaningful and make for a beautifully authentic gallery.
Final Thoughts: There’s No Wrong Time to Capture Your Baby
Every stage of early life tells a different story—and each is beautiful in its own way. Whether you want dreamy, sleepy newborn shots or connection-filled portraits with wide eyes and wiggly toes, there’s no “right” time—just the one that feels right for you.
